Everybody knows that summer time means dipping into the ice chest for a cool drink while grilling on the BBQ. But, sometimes you want someone else to do the cooking for you. So here are a couple of our favorite spots around Hancock Park to get yummy BBQ. 🍖🍗🥩🍔😎
Bludso’s Bar & Que on La Brea serves delicious food, drinks, cocktails, and beer. And if you’re a sports fan they have screens playing all your favorite games. Or there’s outside seating if you want a bit of people/car watching.
The legend of Bludso’s BBQ begins in Corsicana, Texas, where the Bludso family has been perfecting the craft of slow-smoked meats for five generations. But while his family roots are laid in Texas, Kevin Bludso was born and raised in Compton, California.
To stay out of trouble, Kevin spent his childhood summers in Corsicana, working long, grueling hours on the pits for his granny, Willie Mae Fields. There, he honed his craft while swearing up and down that he was never going into the restaurant business. He even spent 15 years with the L.A. Department of Corrections, trying to hide from his true calling.
But finally, the allure of smoke, meat and family heritage was just too much to resist. So in 2008, Kevin opened Bludso’s BBQ, right in the heart of Compton. It was quickly regarded as the best BBQ in all of Los Angeles. Now, with a beloved sit down bar and restaurant on La Brea Boulevard and even an outpost in Melbourne, Australia, the Bludso’s legend continues to grow.– Bludso’s Story
Another delicious spot is Boogie McGee’s Bayou Smokehouse.
In the sleepy, beach town of Pass Christian, Mississippi, where the air is filled with the wet warmth of the bayous, is where our Beverly Hillbilly was raised. There, he learned of culinary delights through his family’s seafood business & his Aunt Eunice… good ole’ Aunt Eunice, whose potato salad recipe is our standard here at Boogie McGee’s.
As luck would have it, a high school reunion brought the Hillbilly to his Queen B. He moved to Los Angeles in 2010 where she has lived since 1999. And yes… Queen B still likes to party like it’s 1999! He found his future bride while his other true love, the New Orleans Saints, won the Super Bowl. That was the best year of his life!
After settling in the Country Club Park neighborhood, the Hillbilly began throwing 4th of July BBQs annually with approximately 100 friends & family. Then, he became responsible for throwing the end of summer BBQs for the Country Club Park community. And then *ding*ding*ding*… a lightbulb went off in his head… why not open a smokehouse for all of Los Angeles? And here we are today!-Smokehouse website
Boogie McGee’s is an ode to our hometown in southern Mississippi where we take everything nice & slow. It’s where sharing our table with our family & friends is a display of love, warmth & hospitality. At Boogie’s, we only use the best cuts of meat with no hormones, steroids or additives. We only serve to you what we would our own. And we are so thrilled to share this with you & all of greater Los Angeles.
SLAB on 3rd Street has rich, delicious food to match its rich origin story.
SLAB, the brainchild of Burt Bakman and the h.wood Group, was born in 2015. The team agreed that whatever was to come would not only have to be dedicated to the best quality brisket and ribs, but would need to be faithful to the elbow-rubbing charm of Bakman’s backyard barbecue.
After 3 years of perfecting the space, kitchen, and recipes, SLAB officially opened as a brick-and-mortar location on Tuesday November 20, 2018 along a busy strip of West Third Street in Los Angeles.
When you sit down at SLAB and taste the marbled brisket for the first time or strike up a conversation over a shared plate of food, you’ll know this experience has been worth the wait.–Slab Website
